I have a Whirlpool dryer that is over 28 years old. The model no. is LG5801XSW0.
It hums while the start knob is being pushed but doesn't start. I opened it up and tested the thermal fuse, start/door switches for continuity, all of which passed.
Then I tried pushing the start knob again and after humming for about 2 seconds, the dryer started again. So I reassembled the duct and the back panel, but now it won't start again. I held the start knob down and it stopped humming after a while, followed by a burnt smell. I waited about half an hour after that and tried pressing the knob again and it hummed but the dryer doesn't start.
What should I do next?

Try turning the drum manually in the correct direction. It should turn fairly easily. You may want to try this on a couple other units to get a feel for it. If it is hard to turn then it is a drum mounting problem.
If it turns OK the odds are that you need a new motor.
I would check that the motor is clean as dust/dirt can clog up it's centrifugal mechanism. |
