In the past month our refrigerator compressor's running almost nonstop. It seems to be getting noisier every day. Last week, It began to smell hot and and even louder- not shutting off until we completely turned off the freezer control . after clicking it off and letting it rest about 20 minutes we turned it back on the #2 cooling and it came back on and ran cool again without the hot "smell" in the unit on top. We've half emptied the freezer to see if that would help and it doesn't seem to be any better- but we have not had the repeated hot smell issue. The coils are clean. Every thing else functions perfectly on the refrigerator and freezer. Now we have noticed that it never shuts off unless we do it manually.
- I've read a number of blogs on line in research for this and they are all complaining about the repair professionals saying this can't be fixed- something about a factory burned down.?
I see no recent postings about this refrigerator issue here- I hope someone has information or suggestions for us. Thank you

A model number would be helpful.
Find your model number - AppliancePartsPros.com

Check the freezer temperature. It should be in the 0 to 5 degree F range.
If lower then it may be a thermostat/temperature control problem.

If higher.
Take a look at the evaporator coils.
They should have a fairly even coating of frost on them.
Below is a link check out the three example pictures about a third of the way down the page.
Note that the compressor should run for about half an hour before doing this. If you do it during or just after a defrost cycle then you may come to the wrong conclusion.

Thank you for your reply. the model number isKSSS48QJT00.
After finding your reply this morning I put a thermometer inside. Temperature on the fast freeze shelf is 10 degrees. ( we have it set at # 2) The compressor runs non stop all day the only time it shuts off is when we manually turn the freezer off. - or early in the morning when we haven't opened it all night long. I am frequently finding frost on the food items inside but it seems to be closing with a good seal.

The freezer temperature seems high so check the sealed system.

Purchased a new thermometer and the freezer temp is consistently below 0. We've checked the seal it's good all around.
