I have a Kenmore washer.
When the spin cycle ends the brake does not fully engage and makes a loud noise. The same happens when you open the lid during the spin cycles.
Is there an adjustment or does the brake mechanism have to be replaced?

It may just involve taking the brake assembly out and doing some cleaning.

See the Sticky near the top of the washer repair page and the videos on this site for some how to do it. When you have the transmission out (not as hard as it sounds, it aint a Chevy) you can inspect the parts and see if anything is wrong.
