Kenmore simple top-freezer refrigerator 253.69847890, manuf. date 5/99, R134a

Lately have noticed sometimes when it starts, for about 1/4 second there is a 'ringing' sound like a piezo chime (seems to come from the area around the temp control dial), and the compressor runs at about 2/3 speed before transitioning to the normal run sound (normal steady purr, sounds like most refrig's I've ever heard). Seems like it's at a constant 2/3 speed for a moment longer than it should be, before transitioning to the normal run speed and sound. Interior light 'noticeably' dims when this happens.

This happens less than 1/2 the time but still often. Other times, get a normal-sounding rapid start.

Is this a symptom failing starter components? That if I replace now, can avoid burning out the start winding in the compressor? What should I test/check to tell if it's simple/cheap vs. an internal compressor problem?

Thanks a lot...

Hi, Rich.

It could be compressor, start relay/overload or run capacitor. First check the capacitor - the rating is on its side, then if you know how to, jump-start the compressor (you'll need a special power jump-cord), or install new start components. If you get it from APP you may return it back, installed or not, without any questions asked in case if you don't need them.

Here are the parts:

Run capacitor Part number: AP4315853
Part number: AP4315853

Relay/overload starter kit Part number: AP5691827
Part number: AP5691827

BTW, the Starter kit includes the run capacitor.

Thank you.

Simon.

Simon, Thank you. I have some knowledge & a simple multimeter, not including a capacitance check. I might be able to find a resistor in the right range & place it in series - maybe I can ballpark the capacitance by watching the needle. O/W, the folks at work will certainly have a proper meter. Jumping the motor sounds a bit scary... Rich

Hi, Rich.

You probably should get the Starter kit and if it's not going to fix the problem, return it.

Simon.
