Hi. Our 7 year old Kenmore top load washer developed a leak. After removing the cover I discovered that the bottom of the plastic outer tub was cracked and leaking.

Molded onto the very bottom of the tub are 2 plastic tabs (fins) that are maybe an inch wide and maybe 1 and 1/2 inches tall (I didn't measure them) and 1/16 to 1/8 inch thick. There are two of these tabs on the right (when facing) side. I don't remember if there are any on the left side. There is a crack extending from the front of one of the tabs toward the outer edge of the tub. There is also a crack extending from the back of the same tab toward the center of the tub. By moving the tub assembly around I noticed that this tab came extremely close to, if not actually in contact with, the metal framework below the tub.

My guess is that this tab has come in contact with the metal framework which, over time, resulted in the bottom of the tub cracking.

There is nothing attached to either of the tabs on the right side of the tub and I don't remember anything attached to the tabs on the left side (if there are any on that side). The only thing I can think of is these tabs are some kind of "guide" or "bumper" to limit the movement of the tub assembly. If that is their purpose it seems to be a very poor design due to the nature of most plastic to become more brittle/stiffer over time. The pressure exerted on the tub via the tab contacting the metal framework would eventually cause the bottom of the tub to crack, as mine did.

Does anyone know the purpose of these tabs (fins) on the bottom of the tub? Any information anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

I have ordered a new tub but would really like to know if there is anything I can do to prevent it from eventually cracking like the original one did.

After you replace the tub, operate the machine with the cabinet off. You will need to jumper the lid switch to do this.

You can then observe what is happening and see if the tub is moving against the frame. If not, and the springs and pads are ok you should be fine.
