Upper part of freezer cold but not freezing food. Unplugged unit to defrost although it is a frost free model. Took off the panel in the back of the inside of the freezer. Plugged in the unit to see if the compressor and fan work. Compressor turned on. Fan turned on then immediately stopped. Is that the way it's supposed to work. Saw some posts that if it's in defrost mode that's right. Another post says that the fan is supposed to work in conjunction with the motor. However the posts I was reading was for a different model Maytag freezer.

Yes if the unit coincidentally went into a defrost cycle the fans and compressor shut off.
They should come back on and cool the unit down in about half an hour.

Thank you for the response but it does not answer my question. I wanted to know if the fan should stay on. I've since found that the fan may start & shut right off if the door is open which of course it was as I was working on the inside. But not sure if this model of Maytag shuts the fan off if the door is open. The manual doesn't tell you that & Maytags system is down so can't get an answer to that

Looking at the wiring diagram the door does not control the fan.

The thermostat controls it and the compressor.
