We noticed the other day that everything in our freezer was starting to melt. We suspected there was ice build up on the inside or dust on the vents in the outside. We turned the freezer cold dial to off and cleared everything out. There was no ice build up and we cleaned off all the dust. When I turn the freezer back on the condenser and evaporator fans are spinning fine. I can't tell if the compressor is working or not. It feels warm to the touch but isn't making any clicking noise or obvious noises at all.
What could it be?

Here are your parts Parts for Amana ABB1921DEW Refrigerator - AppliancePartsPros.comLooks like you are missing a number or two at the end of the model number. You have to be able to tell if the compressor is running. You can usually hear it but also should be able to feel it vibrating. If it is on and there is no frost on the evaporator coils then it is a sealed system problem. This will be an expensive repair as you need a pro. Often it makes more sense to put the dollars towards a new unit. |

Thanks for the reply. I did end up picking up another used fridge this weekend. My hope was the issue might be something other than the compressor itself so I can repair it and use it as a backup fridge or at least sell it for something.
Is there anything else it could be besides the compressor itself? Perhaps some switch that's malfunctioning that's not telling the compressor to turn on?

In looking at the parts list I'm wondering if it could be the Run Capacitor. Hmmm.

If the compressor is running/vibrating then it is not the capacitor. |

The compressor does not seem to be running at all. It's not making any noise or vibrations. The lights are on in the fridge and the fans are running though.

The parts link I gave earlier includes a wiring diagtram. Since the condenser/compressor fan is running you know that the thermostat is OK as the condenser fan and compressor are wired in parallel. Unplug the unit and check the compressor's windings. Below is a link on how to do this. Also be sure to check if any of the windings are grounded. How To Fix a Refrigerator - Appliance Repair Guide - ACME HOW TO.comThere is not a good way to check the start device as it looks like a solid state device unless of coarse it rattles etc. so it is normally a replace it to see if it is OK. The winding check can tell you if a compressor is bad. It does npt tell you that the compressor is good as it may have other internal problems. |
