Replaced clutch and now at start up will lock up after maybe 1-spin. This is a direct drive washer

Did you make sure the basket drive was fully seated before reinstalling the transmission? To do this, with transmission removed, grab the brake cam driver and rotate CCW to spin the basket while pushing upward to make sure basket drive is all the way in. Pulling the transmission generally pulls the basket drive down a bit.

Eric I did, I have taken it apart and checked and double checked. It is seated, How can I tell if the break assembly is bad? The symptoms of this washer was a bad clutch. I was rebuilding it since it was apart. New transmission and new clutch. Never had this happen before

If you can rotate the brake cam driver CCW by hand and this releases the brakes and causes the basket to spin then it sounds like the brakes are fine.

Run the machine with the cabinet off. You will have to bypass the lid switch to do this. Try spin cycle with the drain pump pulled off the motor. May be something in there jamming the motor. When you say it locks up, do you still have power to the motor? Motor is just humming but won't turn? What is the model number of the washer? What was the problem that made you change the clutch?

Eric Thanks Eric, I have run with just the transmission out of the cabinet. no problems. Have done this without the pump, when I put it together I also have never hooked the pump up once I put it back together with the basket, it will spin once or twice, the motor is just humming. I was replacing the clutch because on the spin cycle clothes were still wet at the end of cycle, also during the spin cycle I could put my hand on the tub and easy stop the tub. Model #lte
