HI I was working on my mother in laws washing machine. It will fill and agitate. But then it wont spin and is making a bit of a loud noise. Kind of a spinning clunking noise. but it does drain. I could spin the barrel by hand but I cant remember if I tried while it was making the noise. When I had the motor off I spun the shaft that the motor coupling attaches the motor to and the agitator did not spin but I guess the clutch was not engaged so is that normal? I already checked the motor coupling and it looked fine then my laptop died and she doesn't have a computer... Please help

The clutch is only used during spin. Rotating the transmission input shaft CCW should cause the agitator to go back and forth, rotating shaft CW should cause spin. It will be much more difficult to rotate CW, might be easy at first but once spin pawl engages it will be harder. Use pliers if needed to continue rotating CW. While rotating clockwise, you should see the clutch hub rotate. If it doesn't, the transmission is bad. If it does rotate, look up into the brake hub just above the clutch hub. As the clutch rotates, does the large spring on the basket drive in the brake hub rotate as well? If not, either the clutch band is slipping, there is something wrong with the brake cam driver or the brakes are stuck.
