I have a whirlpool Fridge that lives its life on a covered patio deck. It is at a weekend home. At times items on the top shelf of the freezer part will be cold but thawed. (Only thing I leave up there are some OLD sausage biscuits I do not intend to eat) For instance we arrived there last Friday and the biscuits were cold but not frozen. We used the fridge part to store some cold drinks, added some during the day Saturday and got some out. They were always cold and ready to drink. Before we left Sunday afternoon I went and checked. Biscuits were frozen. Prior I suspected the ice maker was going into defrost mode and causing the problem. So, I lifted the bale and stopped it as there is now water attached during the winter to avoid frozen parts or hoses. Do I have a defrost cycle problem? OR is it just a problem with it not being opened for most of the week somehow (I doubt)? What and how do I need to follow up on this? I have a basic knowledge of the system and parts replacement. Replaced the noisy condenser motor last year with no problems. I thought it was the inside motor and tore into it to find it was the outside fan motor(Neighbor heard it and said it sounded like the inside fan...). Thanks for any help.

Do I have a defrost cycle problem? That would be my guess. But it would not be the ice maker. It is the evaporator defrost. It sounds like an ambient temperature problem. The unit does a defrost cycle but due to the cold ambient temperature the compressor, it's fan and the evaporator/freezer fan do not come on right after the defrosts cycle. The warm air from the defrost then collects at the top of the freezer. OR is it just a problem with it not being opened for most of the week somehow (I doubt)? Not directly but it is affecting it. When you start using the unit the compressor and the evaporator/freezer fan comes on and circulate the air in the freezer cooling the upper area. What and how do I need to follow up on this? I cannot say. When the outside temperature is below/around freezing the unit does a defrost cycle but the compressor does not come on after the defrost so the heat from defrost melts the food in the freezer. Frigidaire does make a kit that is basically a small heater (See below). It adds some heat to the thermostat and fools the unit into thinking it is warm so it turns on the compressor after a defrost cycle. Part number: AP3722172
Click on the picture for more info. Also you can Google "Frigidaire garage kit" for info on exactly how it works etc. |

Makes great sense, Thanks!
The part listed states not for SxS. Is there a way to modify it to work? Another part that will work? Some other "trick" or adjustment to take care of this problem?
Is the defrost timer adjustable? Could I unplug it when I leave and reattach or put a switch inline and that work?
Thanks again! Don

I did some more thinking and looking. I found this video on replacing the Thermostat in my fridge. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAQlvBi1sKsIf I re-routed the end of the capillary tube to go inside that vent... Do you think that would sense the warmer air and kick on compressor and fan to fix this issue? thanks, Don

I have never used this so I cannot say how it would work on a side by side. You are playing a balancing act here. Trying to get the freezer to stay frozen while at the same time trying to keep the fresh food compartment above freezing. Below is a link which looks like tit has some pretty good comments about this problem. How to install a frigidaire electrolux garage cold kit to a refrigeratorAlso note that if the ambient temperature goes too far below freezing then the kit would not be recommended. Compressors do not like to run below freezing. |
