This is a refrigerator only unit. It does not have a freezer. Will a leaking door gasket cause ice to form on the coil? Ice built up so much that it broke the plastic drain pan. Only the bottom rungs of the coil ice over. I think the unit is low on refrigerant and gradually builds ice. This has happened several times. A guy came out and stated that the door wasn't closing properly, so the evap probably iced up from that. I did not notice any sweating or excess moisture on the food.

A make and model number may be useful here.
Also need more info. etc. If the unit is frost free then perhaps you have a defrost problem.
The symptom of only some of the evaporator coils frosting up does point towards low freon.
Yes a bad door seal will cause excessive frost on the evaporator coils. Also if the door uses closing cams a broken cam will effect how the door seals. Moist warm air is entering the unit and will condense on the coldest item in the fridge which will be the evaporator coils. You may not see any condensation on the food as that would depend on what your compartment temperature is. |

It is a Viking refrigerator VCRB5301
There is no active defrost system on the unit. It just uses the off cycle.

I cannot find any info on the given model number.
I would manually defrost the coils. Then shut the doors and let it run for about half an hour. If only the bottom couple coils develop any frost I would say that yes you are low on freon. |
