I have a coin operated Maytag MAT12PDBAW. One of my tenants stuffed a comforter into it and it started to smoke. Now it fills and agitates, but upon spinning it makes a banging sound as if the tub is out of balance. I looked at it today and it had thrown a belt which I put back on. Could it be something as simple as a belt replacement?

Yes, it could be that simple, the stress caused the belt to fail. Anyway try replacing the belt and see if that fixes things.

I changed the belts and it's running better, but not the way it should. Here are two 15 second videos I made that maybe you can look at. One shows the unit just in the "field diagnostic mode":

and the second shows the unit just in the spin cycle:

You can hear the knocking and see the shaking.
Your thoughts?

I watched the videos but really could not tell anything from them. I can only suggest that you thoroughly inspect the springs and support structure and make certain there is nothing caught between the basket and tub and that the drain lines are clear.

Noises and vibration of difficult to diagnose when we are present, and almost impossible when we are not.

Sorry not to be of more help. Good luck.
