My dryer stopped spinning last week but the heat was still on. Buzzing noise only but I could spin it myself while pushing in the door button. I assumed it was a bad motor after reading some info online, and resigned myself to buying a new one.... I got it used several years ago so figured it had just had enough. However! Today, I decided to try it one last time as a prayer, and it started up fine! Spinning like normal. Then, I opened the door and tried to start it again. Nope. So, what could it be that would cause it to not spin, then spin fine once, then not work again!?
Thanks in advance for any help.

You said that you had heat but no spinning. On most units this should not happen as there is a centrifugal switch on the motor that closes when the motor gets close to operating speed. There are two of thees switches, the other one switches out the start winding. Could be that the mechanical mechanism that activates the switches is dirty or broken and is keeping the switches activated. You then do not have a start winding so the motor will not start. Check/clean the motor.
Also check the rotation resistance. Rotate the drum in the correct direction to see how much drag it has. It should turn fairly easily. You may want to try this on a couplwe other units to get a feel for it. |
