So, the cabinets are ordered and now I'm doing my appliance shopping and originally I was going to use the Viking VIPR for a downdraft on the VDSC freestanding range.

However, after reviewing all of the installation information, eg manuals, I've discovered that the VIPR, or any downdraft for the matter, cannot be used with a freestanding unit.

Herein is my question. I am a building and engineering contractor with a background in engineering, mechanical. How difficult would it be to take the VIPR, disassemble the gear motor and housing, and put all mechanical on the backside to allow clearance for the freestanding range?

Or, is it possible to reverse the air inlet so it's vacuum is on the rear face of the unit? That way I rotate the unit and have the mechanical go into a void in the backside of the freestanding unit; build out the island with enough clearance for the mechanical duct.

After drafting out the kitchen area, I designed it for a good flow of sight with minimal obstructions. The idea of having an island hood at this point just breaks my heart.

Help!!!

I did some hunting and modifying a Viking would be a pain in the butt and may not even be possible.
Also could end up looking like crap.

I would look for a different manufacturer.
From the info I was able to find Dacor and Faber make units that can be used behind a slide-in range.
There may be others out there?

I checked out Decor and they state that the ERV48ER works ONLY with the ER48D range. Is this for compatibility or is this an accurate statement by Decor?

I do not know but I would take their word for it.

Usually companies do not turn orders away.
