I have a Kenmore dishwasher that fills then completely shuts off. It seems to be temperature related. If I start it a second time (it shuts off) then drain it because it's too full now. The third start will wash the dishes perfectly including the heated sanitize function. I run the sink hot water prior to start and it's plenty hot. I know there is a thermostat somewhere in the machine, but I think it's an overheat protection device. Any ideas?

Here are your parts
Parts for Kenmore Dishwasher 66513462K901 - AppliancePartsPros.com

If you go to the sears parts site they have part breakdown diagrams.
Unfortunately they will not share these with other vendors.

If you find the part number at Sears and then search it at AppliancePartsPros there is often more info about the part here.

See the attachment for the tech sheet.
Not sure why it takes 3 times to start it.

I would check the following parts with a meter
Thermistor
Heater
Hi-limit thermostat.

You should be able to do this with the power off to the unit and measuring at the control board connection points.
