I have a GE Side-by-Side.

A month ago my freezer stopped cooling and there was frost build up on the back panel of the freezer.

I unplugged the appliance and after all the ice melt I removed the back freezer panel. I removed the defrost heater. It looked burnt-out! The coil was a black.

I replaced the heater with a new one. Turned on the appliance and it all looked good.

A month later (today), we noticed frost build up on the back freezer panel. I removed the heater, the heater looks good. It's not blackened.

Is there a way to check if the heater is good? working? A way to manually turn on the heater to see if it runs?

Did it take a month for the coils in the back to freeze up.

I live in Houston, Tx. It's a very humid climate.

Please advise. All help would be greatly appreciated.

You may have a bad/intermittant defrost thermostat, just replace it. To confirm it, you can go to the "sticky" GE (GS &HPS) model refrigerators and look for my comments on manual defrost at the motherboard in the back.

Thank you Rich for the fast reply...ON A SUNDAY! Wow...

I read around and what I did was jump J9 to J11. The defrost heater started glowing hot.

Does that mean it's a thermistor problem? Or, board problem? Or, both the thermistor and board?

Thank you.

I would replace both items, the evaporator thermister and the motherboard. Sometimes the defrost thermostat becomes intermittant, so I would replace that also.
