The touch pad won't turn off the element. Last night the oven seemed to go into self clean mode without being switched on. How do I determine if it is the control pad or the control unit that the pad communicates with.

Sounds like a control board problem to me.
I am assuming that the element comes on full and it is not just part of the element that heats up.

If it does it all the time you could confirm that it is the control board by unplugging the unit and the ribbon cable from the control panel/keypad at the control board.
Then plug the unit in and give it a try.
If the elemnt turns on then you knpow for sure that the control board is bad.
