I have a Maytag Centennial Top Load Washer. During wash cycle, it only turns in one direction and screeches while turning. When in the wash cycle with no clothing loaded, it just makes a bit of a rumbling noise, but still only goes in one direction. Transmission?

What is the model number? Maytag Centennial doesn't tell me much.

If it's the bottom part of the agitator that is only going in one direction, then yes, the transmission is bad. The top half of the agitator is supposed to only go in the clockwise direction.
