Is there a DIY fix for this dryer- timer does not advance in any auto-sense mode although heats. However dryer still heats in all modes and WILL advance in the timed mode. thanks- d

Assuming the operating thermostat is cycling off/on as it should, then I would suspect the power resistor is bad. The replacement is a different type than your original.

You can test the resistor. Should be mounted under one of the screws that holds the timer to the panel. Disconnect one wire from it and test resistance. Should read around 4000-5000 ohms. Resistor looks similar to this one.

It's probably ok. You need to monitor the voltage across the resistor while dryer is running in auto cycle. Should be near 0 volts while heat coil is on and around 120vac when operating thermostat cycles heat coil off. Wiring diagram for that old model is no longer available. Can you post copy of it? Should be inside the control panel or possibly elsewhere on/in the cabinet.

so-- rehook up the resistor, and recheck voltage?? which auto cycle- the timed dry (when all works) or the auto-sense mode? which doesn't advance... as for the diagram- would a nice picture do?

Auto-sense mode. Yes, a clear readable photo would do.
