The washer fills with water then I hear motor hum and then quit. No agitation, rinse or spin. I removed the water pump and it was clear. I replaced the start capacitor with a new one and same problem. I did notice that it was hard to turn the motor shaft with a pair of pliers. After turning the shaft back and forth, it seemed to loosen but not spin freely. I now assume I need a new motor. Please advise !! They are expensive.

If the motor shaft will not turn when it is disengaged from the transmission then yes, it would seem like you need a new motor.

If you order from this site and that does not fix things you can return it. Before doing anything check to make sure the transmission turns easily though.

I bought a used motor which turned freely. Installed it and after about 3 wash cycles the motor stops. after cool down, then starting just hums and shuts down again. I can turn the transmission shaft by hand but hard when you see the barrel and agitator move. What is the procedure to remove the agitator and barrel? The new used motor turns freely. The old definitely bad.

From what you have described I still think your replacement motor is the problem assuming you have checked out the coupling and the pump.

What is the torque required to turn the transmission? I try to turn it with pliers with the motor disconnected or manually with the coupling on, It requires a good amount of strength to get the agitator and barrel moving. The water pump seems to move freely. The coupling is OK.

You should be able to turn the transmission with the coupling fingers. Still sound like the motor is the issue but you will have to try one out to tell.
