My son has a Kenmore Ultra fabric Care dryer, model 86984810.

When he tries to dry a load the dryer starts up, heats and then just shuts off after a few minutes. The start button doesn't work immediately but does if he waits a few minutes and the clothes dry for a few more minutes. He has to continue this process quite a few times to get a load dry.

I noticed that on the restarts... the dryer makes a strange, almost struggling sound, before beginning operation.

Your model number seems to beissing the first 3 digits.
Sears numbers are usually 3 digits, a period and then an additional 8 digits.

Sounds like the motor is overheating.
It's internal thermal protect trips and then you have to wait for the motor to cool down (protect resets) before it will restart.

Try turning the drum in the correct direction. It should turn fairly easily. If not there may be too much load on the motor. You may want to try this on a couple other units to get a feel for it.

Try running it with no heat. If it now runs OK the unit may have a seal between the blower and the motor. If the seal is shot the blower could blow hot air back onto the motor causing it to overheat.
