Started load in normal cycle went to work 8 hrs later still in normal cycle. Moved switch a little went through complete cycle but towels inside were wet. Machine would spin in spin cycle but not on high. Tried a little later and it would not spin or drain and had a burning smell. Took washer apart nothing stuck between washer drum and by the pump. Any suggestions

Run it with the front panel off and then notice if it is the transmission or the motor that is causing the problem. It sounds like it is one or the other and since you have the burning sensation I am guessing that is the transmission holding up the motor.
It is also possible the brakes are not releasing, but be careful working on them. There is a spring which is under enough tension to injure you.

How can I tell if the transmission is the problem or if it is the motor.

You can see if the motor is trying to turn and it is the transmission that is stopping it, or if the motor is not turning, even with the belt off and the smell is from the motor overheating.
