I replaced the start switch at the suggestion of an electrician. This was not the issue. It connects fine and fires up. But as soon as I let go of the button the machine stops tumbling. If I hold the button in, it continues to run, but no heat.

Sounds like the motor centrifugal switch. It would affect motor running and heat, otherwise, you have two different problems. I would test or jump out the belt switch and hi limit thermostat. If motor still won't stay running, definitely the motor switch which requires replacing the motor.
