I have an old (>15 years) GE Potscrubber 680 (GSD680X-72WW) that stopped draining as of last night. I suspect that the pump stopped working or perhaps a valve or solenoid is stuck, but I'm not sure. :confused:

My wife mentioned hearing a noise coming from the dishwasher during the wash cycle last night... it sounded like a hum and not something that we normally hear while it is running.

It's unlikely that the drain itself is the issue because the sink is draining normally and we have always rinsed the dishes prior to placing them into the dishwasher, so there is nothing other than soap and water going into the dishwasher drain/pump.

If anyone has any ideas as to what I should look at or what parts I might need, I would really appreciate an assist. Btw, we've had several electrical storms in the past month, so I would not be surprised if something electronic in nature got zapped.

Since you did not mention anything I am assuming that the unit washes dishes OK.

Remove the kick plate so you can see the wash/drain solenoid mounted on the left hand side of the pump assembly.

The unit uses the pump motor for both wash and drain.

The way it works is that in the wash mode the solenoid is in the up position and water is directed to the wash arms.
When a drain is required the solenoid receives power for a few seconds. This pulls the solenoid down and the flapper valve in the pump is moved to the drain position. The water is now directed out the drain. The water pressure keeps the flapper valve in this position and then once the water has drained the springs pull the solenoid up returning the flapper to the wash position.

Perhaps he solenoid is not being pulled down.
Check that it can be pulled down manually.
If not remove it and inspect it.
Could be that the solenoid/plunger has a problem.
Sometimes this is a timer problem. The solenoid receives power for more than a couple seconds. This causes the solenoid to overheat and the plastic in it melts causing a it to malfunction.
So if you find an over heated solenoid the timer should also be replaced.

Yes, it washes fine, though a couple of weeks ago it did not. After a thunderstorm, the dishwasher would not raise the Spray Arm Assembly. I ran through the wash twice, but it would not raise. Finally, I disconnected the power from the unit for a few minutes, reconnected the power, and ran through another wash cycle – this time it worked.

Please let me know if this other piece of information might narrow down or change your thoughts on diagnosing the patient.

In the meantime, I will take a look under the unit and see what I can find out.

Again, thank you for the advice. It is greatly appreciated.

No my troubleshooting would be the same.
Though it is possible that during that time the solenoid was overheated but that is just conjecture.
