Hello,

I posted this problem in April, but thought the problem had been fixed.

Our refridgerator sounded like it was turning off and on, and making a clicking sound. The fridge side was getting warmer, and the freezer vents were clogging with frost. The defrost board was changed, and this seemed to have fixed it, but 2-3 weeks later it started doing it again. I changed the start relay, but that didn't help either.

I recently changed the capacitor, and thought that fixed it, but it started acting up about 3 weeks later. This was about the same amount of time as when the defrost board was changed. The only thing those two events have in common was that the evaporator coils were completely defrosted. When manually defrosted, it seems the auto-defrost works for a while. I took pictures of the coils when the fridge started acting up again. I'm also wondering if the compressor clicking off/on is making the auto-defrost reset over and over again so that it doesn't work.

Most probable problem is the defrost thermostat clipped to the top of the evaporator.

Hello,

gtg932, thank you for your post and audio upload on your other post. I don't want to hijack your post, but I do have the same exact problem and almost exact model#, i'm guessing we have different colors.

I understand from research on this very helpful forum that there is something wrong with the defost cycle. I would like to know how to force a manual defrost cycle on this model so that I can see if the coils heat up. Since it is a defrost control board and not a timer, it is not as easy as using a screwdriver. Can you post how to force the defrost?

I have a Kenmore Side by Side model# 106.57036601. It started about a month ago with that same clicking sound that you posted. It seemed to be working fine despite the clicking. Then after few hot days and constant opening of the fridge, we noticed the fridge was no longer getting cold. Fridge temp wouldn't get below 46 degrees, rising to 60 degrees at its worst. Freezer stayed around 0 degrees. Luckily we have a backup freezer and 2 mini fridges so we moved all the food out. I've defrosted the freezer coils by hand twice now with a blow dryer.

Freezer is empty and holds steady at -5 to 0 degrees. Some condiments only in the fridge. My freezer coils are frosting over within 3-5 days. Getting thicker with frost each day. Then fridge temp starts to rise each time we open the fridge door. Clicking sound is coming from the fridge light/temp controls area and is happening every 6-8 hours. Fan runs constantly.

Any help is appreciated!
Thanks,
Debbie

Thanks for the reply richappy. dabbaah, when I say I manually defrosted, I actually meant I used a hair dryer to defrost it. There is supposed to be a way to manually defrost the fridge in the way your thinking, but I could never get it to work. I don't remember the exact way to do it, but you could probably Google it. It seems like there were two ways to do it.

If it fails to go into defrost with either procedures, you have a bad adaptive control in the control board.

I couldn't trigger the defrost cycle. I ended up having a repair guy come and he said the defrost was working. He manually defrosted the freezer and he replaced the bimetl-def part in the freezer. So far the fridge temp is slowly coming down. I believe this is the part that richappy was saying to replace. It was relatively inexpensive about $35. I will send another update in a couple days to let you know if it worked.

I attached a picture of the part in case it can help you. Let me know if you need more info.

Edit: Didn't mean to post twice.
I meant to post this much earlier, but I just wanted to say that it was inded the defrost thermostat causing the problem. It was the dead last part that I changed on the fridge to fix it, and it has been problem-free ever since.

Thanks richappy for the help!
