Replaced belt and washer went through cycle just fine. This morning it will fill but would not agitate. After taking the belt off it would pump the water out and spin when the belt was put back on but when tried to start again it agitated and then kicked out again. What could the problem be?

Try it with the front panel off. If the motor is turning during the agitation cycle then it is probably a transmission issue, and given the age of this model a replacement is probably the best option.
