I have a Maytag washing machine that was purchased in 2005, after it fills with water and begins the wash cycle it makes a horrible loud clunking noise. I was able to change the dial to rinse and have the same thing happen after the refill. I changed to the dial to spin and was able to spin all of the water from the unit. Where do i start on diagnostics. The belt and tensioner pully are fine. I am thinking either transmission or bearing plate. any suggestions

If it is that is a rather large and costly job. Besides the transmission you will also need to change the seals, and possible the bearings. Below is a picture of the transmission. There are a couple of different seal kits depending on the serial # of the unit. I've also included a service manual for you to look over to see if it's something you'd want to tackle.
