I have a Whirlpool direct drive washer. Agitator works but does not spin. Machine makes a loud whirling sound at spin cycle. Coupler seems ok (turning when running along with shaft into transmission) and I took clutch off and seems pretty tight although I can move ring with finger with some pressure. Silver clutch does not spin and motor is running. I can move it a little with my finger, and when spin cycle starts it moves about an inch then stops. Does this sound like clutch? Need help. Can't really afford a new washer right now. Thank you!

If the transmission input shaft is turning while in spin cycle but clutch housing is not spinning, then the transmission is bad. Make sure transmission is out of neutral by opening/closing lid while motor is running in spin cycle. If clutch housing still does not spin, bad transmission. http://www.appliancepartspros.c...n-3360629-ap3096209.htmlEric

Ok. Tried opening and closing lid and motor turns on and off but clutch is not spinning. So transmission is probably bad - it still agitates? If clutch was bad, would it spin and agitator would not be turning in tub? Thanks.

Clutch has no function in agitation mode. Looks like faulty transmission, could be stripped spin gear, broken spin pawl or sheared spin pawl stud. Would still work in agitation mode. Transmission can be repaired as most parts are available if you want to try servicing it.
