Our Bryant heat pump is 10 yrs old and the coil inside the air handler has de veloped a leak. We put freon in it 8 mos ago & it needs it again - $ 280 each time for the service.
The A/C company has quoted us on replacing the entire unit inside and out with a new unit with higher SEER. I kinda don't want to spend that much.
Three options:
Replace entire unit, 10 yr warranty. $ 6000 to $ 8000 depending on SEER
Replace air handler inside, including coil, 10 yr warr. $ 2500 approx
Replace coil only, 1 yr warranty, $ 1500 to $ 1700.
Any opinions?

It looks like replacing the air handler is the way to go. If you replace the coil only it would be a copper coil that fits with the existing air handler & would not be compatible with future replacement of the outside condensor. The new coils are made from aluminum and are designed to withstand the higher pressures of the new refrigerant.
Therefore, if I replace the air handler/coil now, it will be compatible with up to a 14 SEER condensor that I may have to replace in the next few years.
All the installer will have to do is to put a valve on the new air handler/coil to bring the pressure down from 300 psi to 200 psi so that my old condensor unit can handle it & later remove the valve when I replace the outside unit with new.
