Your start device is ok if it starts the compressor sometimes. You have a hard starting compressor. Unfortunately, the Supco hard start kit will get it started, but eventually burn out the compressor.

Thanks Rich. Is there any way to treat/cure a hard starting compressor aside from replacement? And is the general opinion that it is better to replace the fridge than spend the money to have a new compressor installed on a 9 year old fridge? Really appreciate the input.

The general compressor replacement cost is $600-800, fridg. not worth it

That's what I figured. So be that the case, it seems like my options are limited to 1.) cut my losses and buy a new fridge now. Or 2.) install a Supco start device and run the fridge till the compressor finally quits. Is there an option 3? Also, I think I may have purchased that Supco part prematurely. The one that was linked earlier in this thread, which I purchased, seems to only go up to 1/5 HP compressors and I believe mine is 1/4 HP. Will this work, or am I looking at a return?
Thanks again for your continued support.

On this forum and others, the hard start kit is not recommended as they send a huge amount of starting current into the start winding which will soon burn it out. This start device can be used in the old R12 refrigerators, but not yours. I like GE refrigerators, they generally have a longer life and have superior refrigeration systems.
