I have an Amana Fridge....fridge on top, freezer on bottom. Has worked flawlessly for about 8 years. Never a repair. Stopped getting cold...in fact, it is now an oven :)
Anyway, this is whaty I know....
1 - It does not cool
2 - The fan works...I can see it moving and it blows air.
3 - Everything is clean and dust free on the back and underside.
4 - I have manually advanced the defrost timer and move it through the cycles. The compressor hums for a bit, but does not seem to run.
I obvioulsy suspect the compressor is shot and know the repair is $400 to $600 which to me...is not worth it.
BUT, could it be something more simple such as a bad start-up relay? Of is the fact that it seems to try to start comfirmation that the compressor is done?

A model number may help others help you. Yes it could be a start device problem. Below is a link with info on how to check things. How To Fix a Refrigerator - Appliance Repair Guide - ACME HOW TO.comNote that the compressor winding test is not a definitive test. it will tell you if the compressor is bad but does not tell you that it is good as it may have winding to winding shorts or mechanical problems. Same applies to the capacitor if your unit uses one. Other than a physical check there is not a good test for the start device. |
