I have a top load Whirlpool washer that started making a winding noise while on the spin/rinse cycle. It almost sounds like it is getting stuck while trying to spin. I went to look at it and it was leaking water from underneath. It looked like it was dripping from the front underneath but not sure if the water could have been running to the front of the washer before dripping. Its about 6-7 years old. I got all the clothes and water out and at the bottom of the tub and there is stuff floating in it. I do not know what it is but it looks like wet paper or cardboard. Any help on how to fix this or where to start would be appreciated. Thank you!

If this is a basic Whirlpool top loader then it is probably the water pump.

Take off the cabinet and you should see rust stain on the pump. If you cannot determine the source of the leak, operate the machine with the cabinet off and you should be able to observe where the water is coming from.

OK so I got it apart and there are no rust spots anywhere that I can see. It all looks new. I squeezed the hoses to see if there was any leaks there and there isn 't. Should I assume that the pump is bad? Also how do I get the unit to run with the lid off? Was going to try to get it to run with it apart to see where the leak is at.

Well you know what they say about your socks being eaten during laundry. I have now found this to be true. There was one of my three year old's socks in the pump. Not only was it in the pump but it had made its way through the tub hose and was stuck on the other side of the pump. I got it out and put it all back together. I watched it for any more leaks and I got about 7 drips of water but I am thinking that may be from the water that I got everywhere when I unhooked the pump. The noise is still there but not as bad. Think I should maybe replace the pump?

I would go a head and replace the pump as it may have damage which will show up later.

Then continue to monitor for leaks, but hopefully that will have fixed things for good.
