Washer fills and starts running for about 1 min then stops for approx 4 to 5 min and starts running again. In the meantime the timer is advancing.
Can this be my timer or is it something else?

I would suspect a wiring problem. Take off the cabinet and by pass the lid switch, this site will show you how,

Kenmore top loader blues (SublimeMasterJW's Appliance Advice)

and carefully jiggle the wiring to the motor when it stops. If you can get it going then you have a problem somewhere in the wiring or connections.

If this does not work, and on visual inspection you cannot find a problem in the wiring or connections at the timer then you can try replacing the timer. but I really think the wiring is the issue.
