Hi, I've got a Maytag MER5730AAQ electric range. While baking, the broil element came on and would not turn off even after the oven was turned off. I had to trip the circuit breaker to get it to shut off. I've attempted some troubleshooting and would like to make sure I'm on the right track before ordering any parts. I removed the broil element and the temperature sensor. The broil element physically looks ok and the resistance measures at 15.6 ohms. The temperature sensor measures at 1058 ohms. Given those results, I'm thinking I need to replace this part: Whirlpool 5701M271-60 Cntrl-Elec - AppliancePartsPros.comDoes this seem right? If I want to get really adventurous could I just replace the relays themselves to avoid buying what is a pretty expensive part for this old of a range?

Does this seem right? Yes it does.

Finding the relay may be difficult. You will have to get the manufacturer's number off of it and then search the net to see if it is available.
There are two possible reasons why the broil element is staying on.
1. The boards electronics are toast and are keeping the relay energized all the time. This is not repairable and the board must be replaced.
2. The broil relay contacts are welded together. replacing the relay will fix this. You can check this by measuring across them with a meter when the unit is unplugged. |
