Compressor is making a loud "clunk" when fridge shuts down. it is working fine otherwise. we have begun to shop for new, but don't care for anything currently on the market. is it worth calling a repair person to replace the compressor? Refridgerant is R134a.

Just my opinion but I would not do it.
Just the compressor is over $400.00 so you are going to end up putting about a grand in it with no long term guarantee.

Before replacing the unit I would remove the rear cover and check the rubber mounting grommets etc. just to be sure that it is indeed inside the compressor.
This is a long shot but worth doing since whatever you do it will be expensive.
