Our Atlantis has begun failing to dry clothes thoroughly on Intellidry settings. The cycle will finish but the clothes are still damp, and it will take two or three times through to thoroughly dry the clothes. I have noticed that the Intellidry cycle finishes quickly, like 20 minutes for a substantial load. Ventilation is fine and the dryer is heating; a load on the timed dry worked fine.
Repairman looked at it and said the heating cycle seemed to be operating properly and perhaps the thermostat is bad.
Before I start replacing parts by trial and error, I wonder if the problem could be the moisture sensor and how difficult a fix this is.
Any thoughts appreciated.
(PS - dryer dried fine until a service call for an awful noise that turned out to be bad rollers. May just be a coincidence but the drying problem started after this service call).

Here are your parts, includes a wiring diagram. Parts for Maytag MDE8600AYW Dryer - AppliancePartsPros.comDisconnect the dryness sensor wire at the board. Then using a high resistance scale measure from it to the frame. Be sure to find a bare metal spot. If it is a 3 wire hookup you can measure to Neutral. It should measure a very high if not infinite resistance. Now put a wet rag or your wet thumb across the sensor bars. You should see the resistance drop. If not then one of the sensor bars may be disconnected. The way the dryness sensor works is that in auto modes a low voltage is applied to them. If there is nothing or dry clothes in the unit, no current flows and the dryness board advances the timer. If the clothes are wet, there is moisture between the bars so some current flows. The board monitors this and does not advance the timer. |

Thank you for this response and helpful explanation about how the dryness sensor works.
I pulled the sensor bar and it had one green wire attached, which I believe is ground. The two contacts at the other end of the bar had no wires attached. I think that when the repairman reassembled the dryer after replacing the rollers, he neglected to reattach the sensor wires. I will have them back out to correct it.

Just to follow up: Indeed, the sensor wire was disconnected. Reattached and all is working well. Thanks for the assistance.
