Hi All, Brand newbie to the forum here...;)

I am having a problem with our GE PSC25MSTA SS refigerator and thought perhaps someone out there may have had the same thing happen or have a few thoughts.

This morning when I took the milk out, I found ice crystals in the milk. I then noticed the OJ had ice crystals too and some of the veggies and fruit were partially frozen as well.

The first thing I checked was the temperature reading on the display - it said 55. This was obviously incorrect as items were freezing. We have our fridge temp set at 35 and I rechecked it to confirm - yup, no change in the setting - still at 35.

I powered down the fridge to see if that might "re-set" things. This seemed to work. After powering up again, the fridge temp was now reading 29F. After about 15 minutes the value started climbing again (apx 1 degree every 30 minutes or so) and is now up to 48 even though the real temp inside is still around 29-30 according to a thermometer I placed in the fridge. Also the compressor continues to run cooling things further and there is an ice build up on the evap coils in the air channel box behind the lower bins.

I tried the power off/on again proceedure and once again, it reset things and the actual reading was correct for a while and then started climbing again.

I should mention the freezer section is working fine, it is only the fridge that is affected...

I am thinking it might be faulty main control board or the board in the temp setting/display. I am also thinking perhaps there is a bad temp sensor, but I can't see a temp sensor resetting itself by powering down and back up.

If I could find a schematic and omh values of the sensor/s at various temps, I might be able to perform a better diagnosis here. To be honest, I am not even sure where the temp sensor/s are located.

Thanks again for any help anyone may have.:)

Cheers,
John

Hi again... just thought I would write a quick update now that I had a chance to look over things a bit further tonight.

I did find the temperature sensors for both the fridge and the freezer located on the side walls about half way down. I had a hair dryer to blow warm air on both temp sensors and there was no change in temp reading, at least for a few minutes and then both started rising. I am guessing there is a delay circuit so the readings are not all over the place when the doors are opened or warm items placed near the sensors.

This was confirmed when both sensors were fairly warm from the hair dryer and then when I powered down the fridge and powered it back up, both sensors gave readings on the display in the 70's. So the sensors appear to be functioning fine. The one in the freezer started to indicate a drop in temp in a few minutes on the temp display and is now down to -1F where we have our freezer temp set at. The reading in the fridge however is remaining at 72F dispite the fact that it is about 34F in the fridge.

This really has me thinking one of the boards is shot - either the main board or the one in the temp display/setting controls.

Once again, any feedback would be much appreciated...:)

Cheers,
John

Well, It has been a couple months and after a complete defrosting of the refrigerator to remove the excess levels of humidity and ice build up in the fridge, everything was working fine for 4 weeks. Unfortunately the same thing has started happening again. The digital temp readout starts climbing, the fridge runs continuously, and then starts freezing items even though the temperature display for the fridge section is reading well into the 50's. The freezer section remains unaffected and is working fine. I should mention this is a dual evaporator model (one in the fridge section, one in the freezer). When I take the fridge evaporator cover off, the evap is covered in ice build up once the digital read out starts climbing.

There is a temperature sensor located on the side wall of the fridge - I am guessing for the digital display. There is also a temp sensor on the evaporator, I assume to keep it from freezing? Either it is not working, or the only function is has is to confirm the evap is getting cold when the compressor is on. Still doesn't explain why the fridge temp continues to rise while the fridge continues to get colder.

We live hundreds of miles away from a service center and I really have to fix this overpriced POS myself.

Really looking for some help here - if anyone has any ideas - even a source for the service manual on the GE- PSC25MSTA SS - that would be a great help. As it is, I can't even test the temp sensors to see if they are reading the correct resistance values to determine if they might be the cause. Things point to the mother board, it just doesn't make sense it worked fine for just over 4 weeks after a complete defrost, and then starts acting up again a month later.

Cheers,
John

Did you even get this problem solved?

Yes got it fixed after a bunch of diagnostic work on my part. Turned out to be the temp senor in the fresh food compartment (the one on the left side wall). Swaped it with the senor in the freezer first and the problem moved over to the freezer so I was pretty sure that was the issue. Ordered a couple new sensors from GE (think they were only 20 bucks or so), soldered them in (you have to splice the wiring) and the POS is working great ;)

Did you experience any problems with the freezer side thawing and having the ice tray melt enough to drip icicles down over the packages stored on all shelves below?

How did you repair the temp sensor? Cut out the existing faulty sensor with wire cutters and splice in the new one? I can't see that you can disconnect the original sensor anywhere inside the fresh food side or from the back side. How did you perform your fix?

Nope, never had the problem in the Freezer. Only the fresh food compartment, but when I swaped the sensons the, freezer then ran continuiously. I also never had a melting issue, it was oppostite, the fridge wouldn't shut off and continued to get colder and colder.

Yes you have to cut the old sensor out and splice the new one in, no plugs. I also soldered the splice since even a slight bit of resistance in the wire splice would give a higher or lower resistance value and that of course would throw the actual temp reading out a bit. I also used enviornmental heat shrink (the kind with the sealant inside that activates and seals around the wiring to make a water proof splice. I only did this since a fridge can be a high humidity envionment and it is possible (unlikely however) the moisture could wick up the wiring into the sensor and cause it to fail again.

I have this problem. Temp fluctuates dramatically in freezer and fridge section. Ice melts completely and top shelf of food in freezer thaws...then everything works fine the following day. Fridge side warms up to 47 degrees...again returns to normal temps. Have both set to coldest possible settings.

Everything is clean and good...
