Hi, We left town for a week, and didn't notice that our refrigerator door (side by side, whirlpool-style) was ajar! When we came back, the fridge was warm, but the bottom of the freezer was cold. I defrosted the fridge/freezer, and thought everything would be fine. No luck, a few days later the fridge was warm again.
I figured it was a defrost problem which blocked airflow to the fridge. I took the back panel off the freezer, and saw that the evaporator fan was spinning, so I reasoned it was probably the defrost thermostat. I attempted to test that by immersing in ice water, and it read open-line, so I replaced that. No luck! Still a warm fridge after 2 days.
So I tested the defrost heater by energizing it, and it heated up and melted the ice. This fridge does not have a 'defrost timer' it's part of a circuit board. The parts people suggested the 2203080 circuit board, which is the fridge control pad (with the buttons and LED lights). I replaced that for $150 and no luck!
Any suggestions? I am trying to get this into diagnostic mode by pressing the 'water filter' and 'power' buttons for 3 seconds, within 13 seconds of powering up. I am unable to get into the diagnostic mode.
Can anyone tell me how to get into diagnostic mode, or suggest another part I should check? There is one other $200 circuit board located near the compressor, should I try that one? Getting to the point where I obviously should have called someone, or saved up for a new fridge... Thanks you!

The board by the compressor is the one that controls the defrost and also allows the diagnostics of the unit. If it will not go into diagnostics, that board is likely faulty and the source of your trouble. That board is available at the link below. Whirlpool 2203076 Microcptr - AppliancePartsPros.com

Is this the proper way to go to diagnostics? Hold 'water filter' then press 'power' hold for 3 seconds until a beep? This should be done within 13 seconds of 'power up'-does that mean plugging in, or turning on the power via the 'power' button?
I got a new board (however it appears to be defective with a bad solder joint on a capacitor). I tried to push the capacitor back in so it makes a good connection, to test the diagnostic mode, but no luck. When I get the replacement board, I would like to test the defrost circuit right away, to verify that I have actually fixed it, so can you help me out? How can I force a defrost cycle on this thing? Thanks!

The instruction sheet is below, it shows how to initiate the defrost cycle. However, if the unit is not cold when you do initiate the defrost cycle, the defrost thermostat will be open and will not allow the heater to energize. Appliance Ninja attached the following image(s):
