This may be one or two problems.

For running a lot have you:
Cleaned the condenser coils?
Checked that the condenser/compressor fan is running when the compressor is on. Also that it's fan blades are clean?
Checked that the front and rear vents are clean?
Checked that the doors seal OK?

For the clunking
Check that the compressor mounts are OK.
Clunking is often a symptom that the compressor is on it's last legs as it has internal mechanical problems.
