Hi folks, I've had this washer apart once for a drive block. Replaced that, been great for a year. Girlfriend said it was making noise again, so I assumed that is what it was. However, it will fill and agitate fine, but will not spin and makes a loud noise. Sort of a screeching. Clutch seems fine, hard to rotate inner band while holding housing. Brakes seem OK, I can spin the tub by the plastic piece by hand. Took off motor and the coupler is fine. Now here is where I'm not sure the transmission is working. If I spin the plastic 3 prong piece where the coupler is clockwise, should the clutch and gear always spin? It spins freely, then will engage, then stop turning, then engage again etc. Is this a sign my transmission needs replacing? Or should I look closer at the the brakes/clutch?

The clutch hub should spin continuously when turning the gearcase input shaft CW. If it starts/stops, then the spin gear probably has some stripped teeth on it (plastic). The gear is replaceable, or just replace the gearcase.

So i popped the clutch off. I noticed the shaft has a bunch of play, and if I hold it a certain way the part that engages the clutch will spin constantly. Still a gear, or possibly a bearing? Gear easy to replace? Can I just pop the top of the transmission off? I'm pretty mechanical car wise, washers are new to me. New gear case seems pretty expensive
