Last night, I opened my freezer door and heard a very loud sizzling sound ( the exact sound of water dripping quickly on hot coals). The vents on the lower back interior wall were glowing fire red. I smelled a faint smoke smell. I quickly unplugged it. About an hour later, I plugged it in for a few minutes, but could not tell if anything was working or not.

I need to fix this myself if possible and welcome any suggestions. Thanks. :)

you cought your device in the middle of a defrost cycle. It will defrost 2 ~ 3 times a day.

Nothing to worry about.
