My first problem was a loud noise during agitation, and a slight smell of smoke. I checked the drive coupler which was broken, and then replaced the broken coupler. I tried turning the drive shaft at this point with the motor unattached, and it would not turn. I then tried attaching the motor, and turning the shaft of the motor with a wrench, but it absolutely would not budge. I then removed the gearcase, and removed the clutch, but I still could not get the drive to turn. The motor by itself will turn just fine as long as it's not coupled to the gearcase.

You can try to service the gearcase, many internal parts are available, or replace the whole thing. If you take it apart, make sure it's level before removing the cover as it has 16oz of oil in it. There is no formed gasket for the cover so you have to use a sharp putty knife to go around between cover and housing to break it loose. Here's the parts manual with page 12 giving complete breakdown of the gearcase. One thing that happens is the stud that secures the spin pawl to the neutral drain plate will shear off and the spin pawl will float around and can jam the gears. Also, the plastic spin gear can break a piece off and jam things up. Worth taking a look if your handy. Thanks for the reply. I finally got the gearcase open and looked inside. The large spin gear looks fine, but if I manually turn that gear nothing much else is happening. I'd like to start taking it apart, but there's a small retaining ring on top of the spin gear, that I'm having a tough time removing. Does it require a special tool to take off or is there something I'm missing?

Retaining ring pliers. You must spread the ring to get it off. A small pair of needle nose pliers with narrow tips to get into the ring holes will work. Anything that will fit into the holes to allow you to spread the ring will work.

I completely disassembled the gearcase and found a problem with a part that I do not see labeled on the gearcase diagram you provided http://shared.whirlpoolcorp.com/asse...%208180969.pdf. It's the large metal gear in the bottom of the case that parts 23 through 28 sit on top of. It looks like the gear has about 3 or 4 teeth in a row that are ground down to nubs. I may be just missing where the part is labeled, but I did notice that there is no part 20 for that particular diagram. Thanks for all your help so far. I appreciate it.

Unfortunately, that part is no longer available. It is listed as illustration #20 in older parts manuals as part number 62528 (main drive gear). You will need to replace the gearcase.
