Hello,

Our house was hit by lightning yesterday. A few internal circuits got knocked out, and my DSL modem is shot, etc. The circuit my refrigerator is on did not shut down, and there's power to the refrigerator (lights, fans, etc.). But I can hear it try to start, and it can't. It sounds like:

*click* <compressor tries to start> *click* <compressor shuts off after several seconds.>

The freezer is not freezing. I'm not sure about the refrigerator section, though.

I think it's the compressor that's trying to kick on -- sounds like the hum of an air conditioner. I'm trying to determine the right diagnostics and the parts to buy. I'm thinking it's the compressor start relay. Any thoughts?

Thanks for any insight.

Yes it could be the starter.
There is no good way to check the starter.
Also a problem checking the capacitor as you cannot check it at actual running voltages.

So the norm is if the compressor windings check out OK replace the starter. This is a bit of a gamble as sometimes there are other internal problems preventing the capacitor from starting.

Here is info on how to check the unit.
