I have a Frigidaire side by side (less than 5 years old) that is running 24/7... If it's not cooling... it's in defrost mode.
The Story: First the compressor and evaporator fan stopped running and unit stopped cooling. Cleaned all under and behind unit and didn't help. Replaced the starter and compressor run capacitor and they started working/unit started cooling again. FIXED, I thought. A few days later, I noticed massive frost buildup in the freezer and the refrigerator getting warm. After some research online I decided to replace the freezer temperature control... no help. A little more research online and I learned how to test the continuity of the defrost heater... it was fine... tested continuity of the defrost thermostat... it was bad. Soooo, replaced the defrost thermostat. Back to normal, I thought. The unit now runs pretty much 24/7... only shutting down the compressor and fan to defrost the evaporator? I don't know if I should replace the adaptive defrost control next or try something else? I don't want to call a repair person or replace the unit if I don't have to. I have basic understanding of how the system works and enough electrical experience to feel comfortable working on it. If anyone has a suggestion, please let me know.
Thanks so much!

Here are your parts Parts for Frigidaire FRS6KR5JSB3 Refrigerator - AppliancePartsPros.comHere is a tech sheet. I could not find one for this unit so it is for a FRS6KR5JSB1. Looks the same as the one included with the parts just better quality. http://manuals.frigidaire.com/p...f/Anderson/240389629.pdfFirst the compressor and evaporator fan stopped running and unit stopped cooling. Cleaned all under and behind unit and didn't help. Replaced the starter and compressor run capacitor and they started working/unit started cooling again. I do not know what happened here as the evaporator fan is controlled separately from the compressor and the condenser/compressor fan so the starter should not effect it. decided to replace the freezer temperature control test the continuity of the defrost heater... it was fine tested continuity of the defrost thermostat... it was bad. replaced the defrost thermostat. Did you try forcing a defrost cycle see the tech sheet? Also the defrost thermostat must be frozen to check it, not sure if you knew that. Back to normal, I thought. The unit now runs pretty much 24/7... only shutting down the compressor and fan to defrost the evaporator? Check the freezer temperature it should be between 0 and 5 degrees F. Remove the cover in the freezer so you can inspect the evaporator coils. If they are heavily frosted/iced over, you have a defrost problem. If there is frost only in one area (usually where the freon enters the coils), you have a sealed system problem. Be sure that the compressor has run for at least an hour, if you do this check shortly after or during a defrost cycle you could end up with the wrong diagnosis. This will be an expensive repair as you need a pro. |
