The unit is an Amana electric dryer model LEM547W. The unit is started by pushing the timer set dial. Pushing the timer set dial will start the unit and the unit will continue to run as long as the dial is held in the depressed position. If the dial is released, the unit stops. Recommendations for troubleshooting / repair?

Unfortunately there are two likely problems here, the motor or the push to start switch. Since the push to start switch is in the timer it is an expensive part to replace on speculation, as is the motor. The motor is the more likely suspect, but I do not have the specs for testing it.

Unless someone else on the Forum can come up with a way to troubleshoot the motor I think you should consider replacing the dryer rather than sinking a lot of money into this model.

thanks for the feedback ... actually, i've solved the problem. first some background. I replaced the motor about 4 months ago ... so I should have been past the infant mortality problem ... I checked for continuity across all the themal cutouts and the fuse ... all were good ... so that narrowed it down to either the starter switch, the door switch or the odd fluke motor. a continuity check of the switch showed it to be operating intermittently ... I replaced the $11 door switch and now things work like they should. ... but thanks for the thought.

Well, fantastic, we all like it when a plan comes together, particularly when the plan only costs $11.

Thanks for the update, and good luck going forward
