GE Profile Washer malfunctions intermittently in the rinse cycle. Washer sometimes leaks water onto the floor (relatively small amounts. a quart or two?) and leaves the clothes with soap after rinse cycle is complete. The water seems to be coming from the washer itself and not the drain hose - house drain seems to be fine and no water present at/near it. Wife reports an 'electrical' smell accompanies the malfunction. May or may not be exclusive to the 'whites' cycle - has occurred for large and super load settings (might for smaller loads, but we rarely use).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Okay, replying to my own question after some input locally. Had a service call for it yesterday and the fellow told me that the very likely problem is that the device that changes the transmission position/function has a known design problem that creates problems after some period of use. Says the device is essentially a flat bearing of sorts with steel bearing elements that roll on an ALUMINUM way to actuate the transmission. Predictably, the ways become worn/irregular/rough, so the tub can spin with a full water load instead of agitate or maybe even do some of both. Sometimes the trans actuates ok, sometimes not and that explains the intermittent nature.

Anyway it doesn't appear to be feasible to just replace the transmission due to cost and the fact that a new one would last only 4-5 years too. I may take a look to see if I can gain access to the aluminum way. If so (and I doubt it), I could resurface it on the Bridgeport and maybe shim it back to position. I'm sure a very low likelihood of that being possible.

If anyone has any input regarding this explanation and/or the possibility of being able to access the aluminum way that seems to be the problem, please comment. Thanks!

I took a look at the transmission and the cost is roughly $140 on this site. That's a reasonable price and it'd be worth it to me to change it out if I were able to that that myself. If it requires a service call, the cost would very likely exceed what I'd be willing to spend on a 5 y/o washer that would logically only last another 5 years at best (assume new trans would last about as long as current). I'm a mechanical engineer and very mechanically inclined, but have never worked on a washing machine (insert engineer joke here...).

Would anyone care to comment on the difficulty level (including possible need for special tools, etc.) and on the possibility that the replacement transmission assembly is indeed likely to fix my problem? Thanks for any advice.

Thanks for the informative postings. I am not aware of the problem you were told about, but GE is very close with their technical data and those outside of the GE family have very little access to their internal thinking.

It is difficult for us to judge your ability to make a repair like this, but given your background and demonstrated knowledge, you should be able to make the repair. Of course you run the risk that a transmission replacement will not solve the problem. but with your symptoms and prior diagnosis and the fact that the GE transmission is essentially self contained I think there is a good possibility that a new transmission will fix it.

Here is a service manual for a machine like yours. Look through it and then decide if you want to go ahead.

Good luck, hope it works out for you.

Hey, thanks a ton for the reply and manual in particular. My current thought is that I will review the manual to consider whether I want to tackle the transmission change and in the meantime will continue to use the washer when I can watch it closely. If I can catch the malfunction in progress and confirm tub spinning with full water level, then I'll have some real confidence that it really is the transmission (thanks for the 'self-contained' note), and not something different like simple overfilling for example.

If I can confirm tub spinning with a full water load and feel good about the trans change instructions after looking the manual and washer, I'll give the trans change a shot. Will let you guys know what goes on. Very much appreciate your input and all of you who post the tips deserve the courtesy of feedback when it's all said and done...

Did you check your warranty on the washer? I believe I saw that the transmission is covered for 10 years on my older model GE Profile but I could be wrong.

Yeah, I'm now hoping that the transmission is still covered. Can't find the original manuals, but will look it up on GE's website. Think the transmission may be covered for at least 5 years and now know that the washer is closer to 4 years old than it is to 5. Think whatever warranty might be left will be parts only, though, and hope they'll send the part itself to me without having to use their service person. Think the labor alone might drive the price beyond what I'm willing to pay for only 4 more years of likely service. Watched a few loads this weekend with the front cover off and predictably, the problem didn't surface. Still hoping to confirm the behavior before ordering a new transmission (even if under warranty).

Thanks for the update.

You are probably correct in that if the warranty does cover the transmission it will only cover the part and not the labor, but if you can replace it yourself you will not have spent any money.

Well, my wife and I gave up and bought a new machine. We had a similar issue to your problem and we just called GE about having a technician come out.

It would be $99 just to have someone come out and give an estimate. I checked my manual and our transmission on our 9 year old Profile was cover up to 10 years but you're right in that the warranty only cover parts. Oh, that $99 fee would then be applied to any labor costs and if you choose not to fix your machine, GE said they'd give a $20 to $100 rebate towards a new machine. (usually $20 they said)

We decided it wasn't worth the cost and hassle to fix the old machine and took advantage of Columbus Day sales. Loved my old Profile but it was time to move on.

Good luck in whatever you decide.
