The dryer hums when I push and hold the start button but after a few times trying this it stops completely. I cleaned out the dryer and the ton of lint trapped in side and it started up and dried one load. Dryer was not heating, checked thermostat and replaced it. When the load was drying ( it was drying and warm) I opened it to ck it and it wouldn't start back up. It did the same thing as before. I push the start button and hold it, it hums/buzzes but if I try too many times it stops buzzing and nothing works.
It's an older dryer but it was working perfectly until last week. Should I give up and get a new one?

You didn't specify if it's gas or electric and you didn't mention a model number.........You replaced the fuse without finding what the problem was the fuse blows out for a reason. Check all motor circuitry with your tech sheet from underneath the control panel......also check all thermostat's/thermistors, cut off thermostats and element in the heating circtuitry and track your problem.

My dryer is a kenmore Gas dryer model # 110-97282100.
How long do dryers usually last? I think this one could be almost 20 years old. Is it worth trying to revive it?

your motor is bad. when it hums the motor is trying to start but cannot. once you try starting it several times the motor internal overload kicks out and the motor has to cool down before it try's to start again. you have the life out of the dryer, at 20 years I would not spend any money on it.

Could possibly be bad contacts on the motor try jiggling the connector on the motor and cleaning out the connector with compressed air or small tools cleaning the surfaces. after reassembling try pushing the door switch in and hit the start button in mode and turn the drum by hand and see if it engages and turns the drum and gets rid of the humming if it does it may get you by for awhile but you got 20 years out of it which is pretty good might be time to start saving for a new one here soon.
