My 12-year-old Maytag side-by-side refrigerator had ice covering the evaporator coils. I melted it with a hairdryer and turned it back on. It started to cool down immediately. I turned it back off, because I don't want to have to defrost it again. So . . . now what?

I am new at appliance repair, so any help you guys can give me is greatly appreciated.

Dale

PS I posted a few days ago, but can't find the thread again. So . . . Scott, I am not ignoring you suggestions. I just don't remember what they were, except like a foreign language. :)

I cannot find any info on a GA unit. The following is foe a GEW unit. It should be a close match to your fridge.

Here is a manual. You will have to joinn the site and then login to be able to download the manual.

You will need to force a defrost cycle.
Be sure that the evaporator coils are frozen as the defrost thermostat opens just above freezing and will kill power the the defrost heater.

If the defrrost heater comes on then replace the defrost board.

If the heater does not come on then you will have to check the heater and the defrost thermostat with a meter to see if they are OK.

If both measure OK then replace the defrost board.
