Whirlpool - Knob advances through regular wash cycle to run extra rinse cycle

Hello,
I set the washing machine's knob to run a regular wash cycle of clothes. However, the knob will keep advancing (slowly) after that cycle is complete, past the "off" point up through the "extra rinse" cycle. It will then run through that cycle and stop at the end of it. Any idea what is causing this second cycle to happen on it's own? Bad timer?

Check the extra rinse switch. If not turned on and not shorted, then most likely a bad timer.
