Edlinc, Yes the refrigerator control does have self diagnostics. The attached file will help you to program the test mode and diagnose the issue with your refrigerator

Our PFSS6PKXDSS fridge sat in storage for the past year. Just plugged it in few days ago and neither compartment is cooling down at all.

Downloaded the .pdf (thank you Joe! ;) ) and ran the diagnostic test. 1st 2nd and 3rd press display FF rd & Fd respectively. This seems to indicate the motherboard and remote circuits are communicating - correct?

Also when powering up, the 88 88 display does not have any blinking segments. This seems to indicate there are no detected component failures - is this correct?

With this all in mind, do you think our unit is simply out of refrigerant? Is this something that can be fixed? Anything else I should try or check?

Sincere thanks for any help/advice!

Qurph, Your post indicates that all is working well.If any pad is pressed within 15 seconds it will generate the following sequence:
1st press - Manual operation – Compressor and Fans (FF) Displayed
2nd press - Manual Defrost – Fresh Food Compartment (rd) Displayed
3rd press - Manual Defrost – FF and Frz Compartments (Fd) Displayed
4th press - Cancel – (Display Off) Normal Operation is restored after approximately 10 seconds. Except " Just because the board has a load energized, does not mean that the component is functioning". Rerun the tests and see if you can hear the compressor and fans running, we wouldn't expect to have the refrigerant "escape" unless something was damaged or separated during the movement of the refrigerator.
You may also want to check the cooling fans in both compartments, they are DCV fans and could be "stuck" and not circulating the air inside the compartments. So listen carefully, during the test mode.

Thanks for the reply Joe. Please excuse my ignorance, but when I test through the 3 presses, what exactly is happening? By your response it sounds like it is "loading" separate control boards, but I don't know what to expect or look for during this test, other than seeing the FF, rd, & Fd displayed.

I do hear refrigerator noise when it's on - but how would you describe differentiating between the compressor -vs- fan sounds?

The fact that neither compartment is cooling down even a little bit seems like it would exempt a few things from being the root cause of the problem. Sure hoping to find out how to find and fix it (I am an EE and have a DVM at the ready if needed).

Our (then working) fridge was dollied onto a flatbed, driven an hour via freeway and then set on a tarp-covered pallet for a year - always upright. It may have experienced temps up to around 100degF while sitting on the pallet.

Thanks again for your help!

Qurph, Basically, you isolate the location of the noise and listen for certain sounds. The compressor usually makes a slight humming noise, and is located at the bottom/back of the refrigerator. Interior fans are pretty quiet these days, it's easier to open the door and listen and feel for air movement. There is also a condenser fan located in the bottom of the refrigerator. You may want to move the refrigerator out, remove the compressor compartment cover and check to see that6 the fan is running, and the compressor too. A lot of servicers use a touch and feel type test. once the cover is removed, carefully reach in and place your hand on the top or side of the compressor. if it's running it should be very warm to hot and you'll feel a slight vibration in the assembly. If not, you need to start check for a power loss to the compressor.
When you first program the control into the test mode, if there are any communication errors, the display will display them, other wise after a few seconds the control will auto advance to the next test mode and you'll press the corresponding keys to get the "88"'s to display and the display will blink certain segments of the 8's to display what component or function has an issue.
When you start the test program, and press any key, you will "walk" the control through the basic checks (first button press will activate the compressor and fans and display FF. the next button press will start a refrigerator defrost cycle with rd displayed. and so on until you advance the control and start the the next load conditions test mode at which time the 8's will appear and the segments will flash if there's an issue.
The last thing you want to do with a refrigerator is tap or work on the sealed system, you want to eliminate all the other possible issues first. As a matter of fact, on this model, you may want to check the control program. It could be that someone accidentally programmed the "showroom" mode. This would allow everything to work, except the compressor, so the refrigerator wouldn't cool, but everything else would work.
